Agriculture in San Diego County
Agriculture in San Diego County is a unique venture, considering the cost of both land and water. The farmers, especially larger scale farmers, are forced to grow high yield, high value crops to generate profits from smaller sized farms. With this in mind, it is amazing what our local farms and farmers can produce! Unlike most farming communities and regions, our largest crop when measured in both farm size and dollar value is flowering plants and ornamental trees and shrubs. Our most famous product, which is shipped worldwide, is our poinsettia flowers, and second would be our avocados. Although the farms are often not large, our avocadoes and other citrus crops are famous for their quality and flavor. The tasty treats we find in our Farmers' Markets and Farm Stands are often grown and produced in our own local farms. San Diego County is at the forefront of organic farming with 292 registered organic producers. In 2007, San Diego organic growers produced over 150 different crops, from the usual like oranges and avocados to the unusual such as jujubes. The USDA’s National Organic Standards Board defines "organic agriculture" as "an ecological production management system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. It is based on minimal use of off-farm inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain, and enhance ecological harmony."
