The data for this project was collected through surveys of 646 male and female residents of La Paz during January and February of 2007. Participants were between the ages of 18 and 28 years old who had experienced a pregnancy before the age of twenty. Comprehensive information about the participants' living situations, health care, work status, earnings, alcohol and drug use, and relationships with their partners and families was gathered and analyzed. The project was focused on the results of the female participant's education, reproduction, geography, and potential for a higher standard of living. The survey was dispersed throughout La Paz in 21 public places believed to be frequented by most, if not all, segments of the city’s residents to ensure input from a wide range of socioeconomic classes. The public spaces included grocery stores, public markets, rural markets, a mall, a movie theater, hospitals (public and private), public health clinics in urban and rural areas, and busy city walkways with heavy foot traffic.

There may be some problematic issues to consider with the study due to various factors. A simple random survey would have been ideal, but due to constraints of time, funding and a single researcher dispersing the questionnaire, a convenience survey was conducted instead. The participants took the survey in public, not at home, which could have excluded those confined to their houses and results in a sampling bias. The participants were given the option to take a self-administered survey or to be interviewed. The interview was administered by the researcher who is a tall Caucasian male from the United States. This may have led to some response bias and participant skepticism about the project itself even though the objective was explained beforehand with an assurance of anonymity.

Using the results from the surveys as well as census reports, thematic maps were created to allow for a spatial analysis of the frequency of teenage pregnancy. There are also maps to display spatial patterns of other variables such as contraception use and educational achievement of the participants.

In order to alleviate the the traditional negative outcomes caused by adolescent parenthood while decreasing current levels of teenage pregnancy, the quality and availability of essential social services must be increased. By illustrating spatial patterns of various factors that contribute to teenage pregnancy, as well as available social services and past pregnancy data, primary target areas for new programs aimed to combat this issue can be identified.
