The municipality of La Paz is home to 43 percent of the state’s total population. The majority (189,176 people/ 86 percent of the municipality’s population) live within the city of La Paz. Generally, the largest concentrations of residents live in the central areas of the city while the numbers decrease towards the periphery areas such as Marquez de Leon on the eastern side of town. The population in BCS and La Paz has realized tremendous growth in modern times, which more than doubled every twenty years until the year 1990.
Younger poor people who grew up in rural areas in the municipality and poor in-migrants from other Mexican states are drawn into the city center due to its capital status and employment opportunities. The total immigrant population in the La Paz municipality is 10,059, which is five percent of the total population. The in-migrant population in La Paz for the ages of ten to nineteen from other Mexican states is 2,032 (966 girls). The top three Mexican states of migrant origin are Sinaloa (2,209), Veracruz (1,173) and Baja California (1,015). As a result of the city's rapid growth, marginalized areas are rapidly forming on the periphery of the city. These unstructured settlements are arising in areas that were unintended for habitation leading to unsanitary and unsafe conditions for those people as well as considerable environmental degradation. It is projected that La Paz’s population will grow at a rate of 3.1 percent per year. Unfortunately, the poorest socioeconomic group will likely grow faster than the wealthiest group with 2.24 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively. |
