SDSU Geo-Treasure Hunt Contest
(last updated: 12:00PM Thursday, 11/10/2005)

As Part our National GIS Day 2005 activities, SDSU's Geography Department is hosting a Fast, Fun, Easy, & Free Geo-Treasure Hunt Contest. This Website is intended to provide you with the most up-to-date and comprehensive information about the contest and other presentations and activities as part of National Geography Awareness Week.

Supplemental Rules

  • The complete official rules will be available onsite on the contest date should any inquiry be made. In the mean time, here are some highlights that supplement the "Latest Announcements" and "Quick Contest Overview" on the main page of the contest Website:

    1. Each participant will be given a list of latitude (y-coordinates) and longitude (x-coordinates) of locations on campus. Lat/Long will be provided in UTM, Decimal-Degrees, and Degrees-Minutes-Seconds to accommodate different types of GPS hardware. Contest rules and objectives, concepts, and simple GPS use will be explained at the start of each contest. Absolutely no experience is necessary and due to the size of the prize pool, you may have a very good chance of winning something!
    2. Participants will agree to abide by certain rules and regulations at the beginning of their contest or will be subject to disqualification.
    3. Participants must return to the starting point WITHIN the time allotted or will be disqualified. Time allotted from Start to Finish is currently 30 minutes (45 minutes for disabled/special needs participants).
    4. At the end of the contest, the participants will be ranked based on scores.  It is not necessary nor may it may be possible to go to every location within the time allotted. These ranks determine their eligibility to select prizes from the prize pool of their contest.
    5. In the event of a tie score, the contest participant who arrived back earlier will be ranked first.
    6. The prize pool for each contest is identical however, each contest is unique and judged separately.
    7. The number of contest participants is effectively unlimited however; the number of loaner GPS receivers is limited. This effectively limits the potential number of contest participants.
    8. In the unusual case that there are many more people interested in participating who need to borrow a GPS receiver, registration in the second contest will be encouraged and/or a drawing will be held for the number of available GPS units and standby “slots” for "no-shows." This is why registration/check-in closes 15 minutes before each contest and pre-registration (online) or early registration (onsite on GIS Day) is highly recommended.
    9. If contest participants elect to work as a team, they must agree to only use a single GPS receiver and will have to decide amongst themselves how any prize(s) will be divided between them. There are no exceptions to this rule
    10. An impartial group of contest officials will have final say over any outcome or dispute. This is intended to be an informal and fun contest to give the participants a chance to use and explore geospatial technologies.
    11. The contest committee reserves the right to change any rules at any time.

What Is GIS Day?

GIS Day is a global event for thousands of users of GIS technology to educate millions of children and adults about how geography makes a difference in our lives through the technology of GIS and to demonstrate GIS technology at schools and organizations around the world.

A GIS, or geographic information system, represents computer software, data, and solutions that are used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in government, education, and business. Learn more!

Last year marked the sixth global GIS Day. It was an overwhelming success. More than 700 registered events were held on five continents and in 76 countries.

GIS Day is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, UCGIS (University Consortium of Geographic Information Science), United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett–Packard, and ESRI.

GIS Day 2005 will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2005, during Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 13-19) which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Both events are part of the National Geographic Society's exciting new initiative, Geography Action, which is a year-long initiative encompassing key educational achievements. In addition to events such as GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week, there will also be many worldwide activities supporting geography action, with their goal being to engage people in learning and caring about geography.

Come join us as we celebrate GIS Day 2005!
Who should attend? People of all ages interested in learning more about geography and the technology of GIS!
