San Diego is topographically diverse - it has over 200 canyons available as open hikeable space to the public under San Diego's Open Space Division. If you would like to learn more about the hikeable canyons around San Diego State University, please explore our interactive website.
Our MissionThe purpose of this project is to highlight areas of recreational and natural in the form of canyons in a set mile radius of San Diego State University. This not only highlights the amount of biodiversity in the region but also encourages anyone who attends SDSU to explore these areas. Robert handled the data collection and analysis as well as worked with ArcGIS to show spatial information. Shannon served as team coordinator while gathering visual data in the form of pictures of each canyon, while Laura will create the website with all relevant information including: area, location, directions from SDSU, events, plant life, and more. The result is this website that is useful for SDSU students to refer to when they want to go on an adventure within close in proximity to SDSU via walking, bus, or car. We used data from SANDAG, hyperlinks with additional information, as well as our very own collected data.
Who is Working to Enhance our Canyons?San Diego's canyons are all part of the watershed system delivering water from the mountains and urban landscape to the oceans. They are beneficial for water quality filtration as well as community recreational use. A canyon, overrun with trash, and lacking hikeable paths, can be transformed into an area dedicated to sustainable use and ongoing volunteerism. This is why local non-profit groups are collaborating their efforts with San Diego Parks and Recreation to create a cleaner and more accessible natural San Diego. Below are links to some of these groups who seek to make San Diego a better place by facilitating and supporting canyon enhancement:
