  • Why are we doing this?

We are not only doing this for a class project (GEOG 583: Internet Mapping and Distributed GIServices) but also to promote Geocaching in the San Diego State University Community.  We know that it can be hard to get out and do something fun, healthy, and cheap.  However, by promoting the local Geocaches around campus, the average student can access what Geocache may be near them, and they get that fun, healthy, and cheap entertainment.  We want Geocaching to become a more well known past-time because it is very geographical, and what better for a geography department.  So get out there and do some hunting!

  • Our Story

Our story is fairly recent. In September of 2008 Stephanie and Daniel met in a Remote Sensing course at SDSU. Given the amount of information in that class and the difficult tests, it was apparent that the two (as well as a few others) stuck out from the rest in their devotion to understanding the course. Stephanie and Daniel both decided to enroll in the Internet Mapping the following semester realizing the importance of understanding the Internet, web design, and map implementation for today’s job market. Stephanie and Daniel came together for a project and were shortly joined by Claire. Claire is an exchange student from China, and is majoring in GIS as a Graduate student at SDSU. Together the three decided to promote Geocaching through this website.

  • Who we are: Claire, Dan, and Stephanie

I am a GIScience Masters major at San Diego State University Geography Department. I’m an international student from China. I graduated with my Bachelors Degree about two years ago from Beijing Normal University in China and come to San Diego to pursue my master degree. My bachelor major is specialized in Urban and Rural Planning & Resource Management, and now my interesting field is Geodemographics. Geodemographics links the sciences of demography and geography; in short, Geodemographics is the science of profiling people based on where they live. I’m interested in this subfield and my thesis is about the Chinese population in the US. I traveled lot during vacations and want to feel this country by myself; though I’ve heard lots of things about America before my feet really stepped on the land of America. America and China are two countries with plenty of differences, including culture, education, history, life style, and attitudes and values of people. In any case, my recent two years life in US is wonderful.

I am an Environmental Science Major at the San Diego State University and currently work a few part time jobs to pay my way through. Originally born in Northern California, I left at the age of 18 to join the military. Eight years later I decided the military (although good for some) was not so good for me. I felt there was too much programming, and not enough individual thought. Environmental Science pulls from so many disciplines that being an individual can actually make a difference. I have heard two great sayings, the first “be the change you want to see” and the second “invest in your character” through Science I feel I can do both. I have currently been to over 30 states and 20 countries, and have made it a policy (since 2001) to explore at least one new country every year. New Zealand (where I have family and friends) has become the one country that continues to elude me, but I know someday I will make it and it will be fantastic experience.

I am a GIScience Masters major at San Diego State University Geography Department. I am have finished my 2nd semester (Spring 2009), and hope to have 2 left! I graduated with my Bachelors Degree in Earth Science Geography Emphasis from Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. I am from Boise, ID. I got my interest in Geography from my parents, who are both Meteorologists. I wanted to get my head out of the clouds and closer to the ground. I found maps, cartography, and best of all Geographic Information Systems/Science (GIS). I was hooked! I am pursuing an education in GIS because I want to manage databases, create geospatial information, and overall create maps for public use. I have used GIS in transportation, city planning, physical geography, and demographic industries. I am interested in all aspects of geography and I want to take my GIS skills and knowledge to many different disciplines. I am very excited about the future.
