Latitude and Longitude Coordinate Conversion Utility

• STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS

  1. This is an advanced tool which is only necessary if you have obtained latitude and longitude coordinates in Degrees-Minutes-Seconds (DMS) format.
     • If you followed all of the steps of STEP 2: SEARCH FOR THE COORDINATES OF MY CHOSEN PLACE , you do not need to use this tool.
     • If you found your coordinates from other sources like the Web, there is a good chance you will need to use this tool because this Collaborative Mapping System only accepts coordinates in Decimal Degrees (DD) format and DMS format is fairly common.
  2. In Decimal Degrees format, the latitude and longitude coordinates are represented as positive or negative decimal values.
  3. Degrees-Minutes-Seconds format often includes the "hemisphere"---that is, a North, South, East, or West to indicate what part of the earth the coordinate is located.
     • If you have a "N", "S", "E", or "W" attached to your latitude and longitude coordinate, you can convert it here.
  4. Remember to convert BOTH latitude AND longitude
  5. Don't forget to write down the results of the conversions somewhere so you can use them for mapping your chosen place.
